Monday, December 21, 2009 10:30 - At around 10:30 Monday morning, the companies where dispatched to the 3400 block of Victor ave in Brookhaven, for the building fire which was quickly upgraded to a working building fire by 52-9B, bringing Companies 52 (Brookhaven), 45 (Parkside), 57 (Upland), 47 (Chester Twp), 50 (Middletown), and the RIT Companies from 63 (Green Ridge) and 44 (Springfield). Engine 45 under the command of 45-9c ( M. DiDomenico)made a quick response with the 4 man crew in station and arrived as the first due Engine Company on scene with smoke and fire showing from the first floor. The Engine crew laid a supply line into the scene and was ordered to stretch a 2 ½” attack line. The front windows were vented and an aggressive interior attack was made to knock the majority of the fire on the first floor before the supply line was compromised, forcing crews to take up a defensive position in division 1. In all, two 2 ½” and two 1 ¾” line were pulled to make an aggressive interior attack on the fire on both divison’s while horizontal and vertical ventilation was being performed by crews. Crews had a great knock on the fire, but the void spaces caused an extensive battle that forced 52 Command to order a building evacuation and to go into defensive operations. Once the fire was knocked down crews re-entered the building to begin mopping up as well as to allow the fire investigators in to examine for the possible cause of the fire. Crews were on scene for over three hours. Special thanks to New Castle County 11 (Brandywine Hundred) for covering our local and helping us with returning the Engine and Tac back to service after the fire.
